How I Became A
In 1997, I was working as a personal trainer at the Sports Club LA in Newport Beach, CA; on my way to a full time career as fitness manager and full-time personal trainer. I knew I’d need to make a great income if I was going to “make it” in Southern California. But the 6am – 8pm grind was literally sucking my passion for fitness out of me and I couldn’t picture myself fulfilled and happy if I was continuing down that path.
I snapped myself into research mode and starting talking to the leaders in the fitness business industry and crunching the numbers. Before the year’s end I started my own fitness business (full time) and making more than I would have as a personal trainer and fitness manager in the corporate world. Now more than 15 years later, I am happy, fulfilled and love waking up every day to “go to work”.
The reality of the fitness business is that we are only valuable if we can stay healthy and teach classes everyday and workout with our personal training clients. At one point in my career, I was earning a very good income, but the only way I could maintain that income was by training 50 – 60 hours per week.
Most fitness professionals don’t have a back up plan and a back up plan is the only way you are going to be able to support yourself and your family long term. Eventually our bodies are going to tell us to slow down.
It is as simple as understanding where to direct your natural talent and energies and learning to vigilantly prioritize your time according to those priorities. Armed with some solid insider info, you can turn your dream of making a full time living as a fitness professional a reality (take it from a girl who knows!)
Do you dream about presenting at your favorite fitness convention or teaching certification courses for fitness professionals? If so, here’s what you need to do:
- Identify your talents and develop something truly unique or a unique spin on something that already exists, and then get noticed by the leaders in the fitness industry
- Understand how to get the “gig” – requirements, deadlines, costs, etc.
- Have a press kit – resume, press clippings, head shot, video montage.
- Obtain the highest level of education in your particular discipline.
If you want to follow your dreams, you are the one who will create and make your dreams come true. When I was new to the fitness industry, I honestly thought that if you were really good, people would “hear about you” and come knock on your door. I was so wrong!
In 2008 I was selected as a Master TRX Trainer and since then I have been traveling the U.S. teaching fitness professionals how to properly use the TRX Suspension Trainer. I love being a presenter for TRX Training and the best part is connecting with like minded fitness professionals all over the country.
